I know that most of you are eager for the latest news on The Monkees’s
projects, so here goes.
The material for “Odd’s & End’s” is being slightly delayed in arriving to us
for disc mastering. From what I have been told, there are a couple tracks
that are being cleaned up, otherwise its ready to go and we should have it
here be this coming weekend if all goes as planned. In which case, I see no
reason why this project will not be completed by October 28th as planned. As
soon as we get the material, you will all be emailed a complete track
listing.
Also to be ready on October 28th will be the “Micky Dolenz & Davy Jones
Solo” cd, we have this material here now and it sounds very good. The art
work for this cd is pretty plain (B/W) and straight forward giving no
information about the tracks. The following is a track listing of this cd…
1 Daybreak
2 Hangin’ By A Thread
3 Beverly Hills
4 It’s Now
5 Lovelight
6 Can She Do It (Like She Dances)
7 Don’t Go
8 To Be Or Not To Be
9 Girl
10 Love War
11 Rainy Jane
12 Free
13 Nicia
14 Dance Gypsy
15 Look At Me
16 He’s Leaving Here This Morning
17 Blanket For A Sail
18 Gotta Get Up
19 Are You Sleeping
20 Me And My Arrow
21 It’s A Jungle Out There
22 Sometime In The Morning (Live)
23 Goin’ Down (Live)
This cd will be available on October 28th, along with the “Odd’s & End’s”
cd. The price for each cd will be $20.00 each, plus $2.00 shipping (USA).
Note: “Odd’s & End’s” will include color liner notes that will be much more
detailed explaining the tracks.
Again, as soon as the material arrives, we will email you track info on
“Odd’s & End’s”
Also, we have a soundboard stereo concert that was taped from 1992 at Ruth
Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, FL. We plan a realese of this sometime in
November.
For those interested in submitting a pre-order for either of the two cd’s for
10/28, you may do so by sending a check or money order payable to:
DirectCD
P.O. Box 34
Schofield, WI 54476

Monkees Scripts!
Yeah I’m feeling generous right now and since I just got some new scripts
in the mail I figured it was time to offer my script copying again.
For those who haven;t seen this offer before, here’s the lowdown. I make
copies of the television scripts from the series and I do it for cost of
copying, shipping, envelopes plus $1-1.50 for my time. Each script is
copied and bound with velo binding and has a clear plastic sheet across
the front and back fro protection.
The new scripts I got are:
Art For Monkees Sake
Monkee Mayor
Monkee vs. Machine
Alias Micky Dolenz
And if people really want some of the old ones (ie you didn;t get one
before or want another) i also have the following available:
Fairy Tale
Find The Monkees
Monkees Toy Around (an unproduced episode)
The Monkees (Pilot)
HEAD (original draft)
Since I figure lots of people will want them i think i will get the same
price break so episodes are $10 with HEAD being $15.
Same drill as before – I need the money in advance (newbies be aware I am
reliable – been onlist for 3 years and this is the 4th time i will do
scripts – no disatisfied people yet!). Once I get all the orders and
money I will make the copies and ship them all out.
Lets set the deadline for orders on October 19th and the deadline for
payment on the 23rd.
Checks and money orders (preferred) can be made out and sent to:

Ed Reilly got this via e-mail from Ken Crane’s LaserDisc:
>> JUST ANNOUNCED UPCOMING LASERDISC RELEASES Retail KC Price
>> Monkees Vol 1 29.98 23.98
>> Monkees Vol 2 29.98 23.98
They told Ed there will be 3 episodes per disc and will be taken from the
same masters that were used for the video tapes. They tell me that Volume
1 will contain “Royal Flush”, “Monkee Mayor”, “The Christmas Show”. Volume
2 will contain “I’ve Got A Little Song Here”, “Monkees at the Movies”, and
“A Coffin Too Frequent”. The laserdiscs are expected to be released by
Rhino in mid-December.
Monkees fans ask me ALL the time if Rhino is going to release anything on
laserdisc, but this is a big surprise, because the last time I spoke to the
head of the video dept. at Rhino, he was adamant that there was no market
for Monkees lasers and was putting his eggs in the DVD basket. I have no
idea what the reasoning is behind the sudden change. I’ve put in a call to
him, but he’s out of the office for a few days, so I can’t get an immediate
answer. Also I don’t know yet whether this is a test run or whether they
will release the whole series on laser (I will ask), but I didn’t want to
wait to talk to him before getting the news out to you guys. After all, I’m
sure it’s important that the first two volumes sell well so that Rhino will
do the whole series!
Ken Crane’s Laserdisc is already taking orders for the Monkees laserdiscs.
They knock 20% off the retail price, and they charge only $1.50 for
shipping within the US. That’s probably the cheapest price you’ll find for
the laserdiscs. You can e-mail them at discs@kencranes.com, or phone them
at 1-800-624-3078, or fax them at 714-892-6369, or you can check their
website at www.kencranes.com/laserdiscs. If you order the laserdiscs on
your credit card now, your card won’t be billed until the discs are shipped
in mid-December.
I called Rhino Direct (1-800-432-0020) but the folks who answer the phone
there haven’t yet gotten word of the laserdisc releases. They say they may
eventually be offering the lasers, but right now it’s just too soon. They
don’t have the info in their system to start taking orders, as a rule,
until 15-30 days prior to release.

I just found a new CD on Flashback Records (division of Rhino) called
_I’m A Believer And Other Hits_. This is the one that has “Ceiling In
My Room”, and no, taking away the hiss from the song doesn’t reveal any
weaknesses. It’s a great classic Davy tune written by himself plus two
of The Sundowners. I didn’t notice any differences in the mixes of the
other songs though. “A Little Bit Me, …” is the stereo mix.
Anyone have any idea when this was released and when/if the second CD
with “Mustang” will be out? It was a fluke that I stumbled across this
CD on my way out of a Wherehouse. I spotted Justus and had to thumb
through the section to see how well the guys were represented.
Incidentally, I also picked up a BAM magazine on the way out and read a
story on Rodney Bingenheimer. It mentions his PBS Monkees auditions
documentary _Daydream Believers_.

A close remake (not a Monkees recording) of the Monkees song was running
all summer in Denver in a very cute commercial for the Denver Zoo’s new
Primate Panorama display. It was a montage of shots of the monkeys and
apes, semi-psychedelic flowers, and (I think) a drum head with the Primate
Panorama logo. Very much a take off on Monkees show opening shots.
Also, I’m sure this is old news, but the Isuzu Altima commercial very
effectively uses “I’m a Believer”, with the farmer singing along in the
car. I think this is a great use of such an exuberant song.

I just found this book at Blockbuster Music:
Rhino Presents The Greatest Rock & Roll Stories, by Art Fein.
Copyright date is 1996.
Published by General Publishing Group, Los Angeles.
ISBN: 1-881649-75-X
This book has several “scoop” stories on what _really_ happened in
rock&roll history – including several famous tales & scandals running
from the 50s to the present. Several Monkee mentions (a couple are
chapters of their own):
“Stephen Stills Flunks Monkees Audition”
“Monkees Annouce They’re ‘Plastic'” (It is a very well done chapter)
“Hendrix Booted from Monkees Tour by DAR (Not)”
and a bit about the Plaster Casters. (Did y’all know that the Monkees
were reportedly first on the list to be immortalized?)
Several other articles mention the Monkees in passing and in the
footnotes.
Since it is a Rhino released book, you might be able to find it out on
their website.
Hugs,
Smile 🙂

Subj: Domino’s Pizza Donates Olympic Opportunity to Make-A-Wish of Michigan
Gala Auct
Date: 97-10-27 16:28:32 EST
From: AOL News
BCC: Monkeeluvr
ANN ARBOR, Mich.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Oct. 27, 1997–Domino’s Pizza
Inc. has donated a week-long trip for two to the Winter Olympic
Games in Nagano, Japan, to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan
for its annual Magical Moments Gala Auction to take place Nov. 15 at
the Ritz-Carlton in Dearborn, co-hosted by Don Shane and Mitch Albom.
Domino’s became the exclusive pizza sponsor of CBS Sports’
broadcast of the Winter Olympics (Feb. 6-21, 1998) after signing a
deal with the network in September. CBS provided Domino’s with two
week-long trips for two to the Winter Olympics — valued at
$28,000 each — in acknowledgment of the sponsorship. Domino’s is
using one as an incentive for its franchise owners during the launch
of its new marketing campaign, Delivering A Million Smiles A Day,
and selected the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan (Domino’s home
state) to receive the other.
“We’re very excited about the donation from Domino’s for our
Nov. 15 Magical Moments Gala,” said Susan Lerch, Michigan’s
Make-A-Wish Foundation executive director. “This is truly a unique
auction item, and one of many great donations made to us for this
event.”
The trip package includes round-trip airfare from New York’s
JFK Airport to Japan’s Narita Airport; accommodations at the
Karuizawa Prince Hotel; access to CBS’ hospitality lounge;
transportation to and from various events; tickets to various
Olympic events; skiing and ice skating opportunities; morning
excursions to museums and temples; and other amenities. In addition,
guests will be provided with a cold weather outfit (ski jacket,
pants, hat, turtleneck, neck warmer, boots and gloves) courtesy of
Nike.
“We’re happy to be able to make this once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity available to Make-A-Wish,” said Tim McIntyre, Domino’s
vice president of corporate communications. “Our goal is not only to
generate awareness for this organization, but to generate needed
revenues as well. Granting wishes to children suffering with
life-threatening illnesses is a meaningful way to dedicate one’s
life. We hope this donation helps bring people into the gala event,
and that they bid well on this and the other items available.”
Other items donated for the auction include a 1998 Honda Accord
EX; a collection of Beanie Babies, including the McDonald’s “teeny
beanies” and some “retired” beanies; a trip for two to Aruba;
autographed sports memorabilia (including items from the Detroit Red
Wings); guitars autographed by the Monkees, John Mellencamp and Hall
& Oates; a set of “scrubs” from NBC’s “ER” autographed by the entire
crew; jewelry from Astrein’s Jewelers and more.
The eighth annual Magical Moments Gala to benefit the
Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan will take place at 7 p.m. at the
Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Dearborn. The event will feature a silent
auction, a live auction, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, dinner and
entertainment.

RHINO HOME VIDEO TO RELEASE RETROSPECTIVE ON
RETRO ROCKERS AND POP-CULTURE PHENOMS THE MONKEES
“Hey Hey We’re The Monkees” documentary features reminisences with the
Monkees, musical performances and clips from favorite episodes
LOS ANGELES, CA — Thirty years after pop and cultural icons, The Monkees,
debuted, they’re back and bigger than ever in “Hey Hey We’re the Monkees,”
a fact-filled documentary exploring the fabbest, mop-topped foursome after
The Beatles. The feature follows on the heels of “Justus,” the first
record released by all four original band members in over 25 years (on
Rhino Records), and a bang-up 25 city national tour this summer. Initially
aired as a special on the Disney Channel earlier this year, “Hey Hey We’re
the Monkees” makes its home video debut on November 18, 1997, with the
addition of 19 bonus minutes never before seen.
The retrospective, which will appeal to fans and casual observers
alike, captures the captivating tale of four young actors and musicians –
Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith, Mickey Dolenz and Peter Tork – brought
together to form a rock supergroup. From the roles of creators Bob
Rafelson, actor Jack Nicholson and Don Kirshner to the Monkees themselves,
the documentary follows the simple singers’ careers from pawns to a
legendary group who sold over 20 million records, had six Top 10 hits and
recorded such classics as “Last Train to Clarksville,” and “Daydream
Believer.” Included are scenes of the four back then and their
reminiscences now, the casting of the popular TV show through its three
seasons and clips from the foursome’s pre-Monkee days and each musician’s
favorite episode.
Monkeemania is reaching a renewed fever pitch with the release of their
new record, national tour and VH1 daily programming of the original show.
When “Hey Hey We’re the Monkees” originally aired on the Disney Channel, it
received “three out of four stars,” (USA Today) and had Phil Gallo of Daily
Variety saying that it “breezes along with the briskness of one of the
quartet’s classic comedies while managing to turn over every historical
stone.” And, since the airing of the specials, sales of Monkees videos and
CD’s have increased tenfold. It’s enough to make most say, “I’m a
Believer,”
Rhino Entertainment, parent of Rhino Home Video, acquired the
rights to the complete Monkees catalog in March of 1994. Since then, Rhino
has overseen a comprehensive reissue of the band’s nine original albums and
released their most popular TV episodes, specials and films to home video.
Among the other Monkees titles available on the Rhino Home Video label are
“Head,” their only feature-length motion picture, “33 1/3 Revolutions Per
Monkee,” their 1968 NBC special and “Heart and Soul,” the group’s official
videography. Soon to be released is “The Monkees Metal Lunchbox,” which
includes each musician’s favorite TV episode and a collectible puzzle, all
packaged in a special-edition lunchbox.
All Rhino Home Video titles are available via retail outlets or by calling
Rhino/Direct at (800) 432-0020. Rhino Home Video, a division of Rhino
Entertainment, can be found on the Internet at www.rhino.com.

If you have a Blockbuster Music in your area, and if that store sells
books, be forewarned that you may be able to pick up the Rhino book,
“Hey, hey, we’re the Monkees” for a very good price.
The Blockbusters here in Vegas are closing out their book sections. The
clerk told me that this is chain wide. All books at the Vegas stores
are 70% off. I just got a copy of the Monkee book over my lunch hour.
This store had four copies. Naturally the supply in your store will
vary, and they will not special order of course.
Just thought you’d like to know.
