WOW! I’m still recovering from the shock of Entertainment Weekly
printing a positive article on the Monkees!!
It is in the Picks & Pans (type of) section. There is a caricature type
drawling of the guys on the top of the article, and it mentions they are
on Monkee Mondays on Nickalodeon. I don’t have the magazine here at
work – but wanted to mention it so people could go buy it if they want.

Happy Happy Joy Joy !!
Monkees in Las Vegas July 4, 1997
The concert in Vegas was ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!!!!
Not only did they joke around (Tarzan joke included), they played JUSTUS!
Play list follows:
Last Train to Clarksville
That Was Then, This Is Now
A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You
The Girl I Knew Somewhere
For Pete’s Sake
Look Out, Here Comes Tomorrow
Regional Girl
I Wanna Be Free
Mary, Mary
I’ll Be Back Up On My Feet
It’s Nice to Be With You
Long Title
Lucille
Since I Fell
Oh, What a Night
Circle Sky (old version)
Every Step of the Way
Randy Scouse Git
Girl
Words
I Believe You (First time ever performed live and Peter did an
impressionistic dance with it. The audience thought he was whacked!)
Valerie (in Elvis Costume)
Oh, My My
I’m a Believer
Shades of Gray
Listen to the Band (Porpoise Song in the middle, then back to LTTB)
Heart and Soul
Steppin’ Stone
Daydream Believer
Pleasant Valley Sunday
This was my first concert, but veterans tell me it was just about the BEST
they’d ever seen. I feel so lucky!! I also got to watch the sound check.
Incredible!
By the way – the Why Mike isn’t here lines were pretty funny and revealing.
The bottom line was the standard “screenplay” and Micky reciting “he
doesn’t like touring.” At which point Peter shot back, “He’s lousy at it
anyway.” This ought to clear up the debate a few days ago about Peter’s
comments in England.
I saw Davy running around during the sound check in shorts, no shirt. The
man looks just fine, thank you! Barely decernible love handles. He has a
DEEP tan and looks great from where I was sitting (about a foot away, at
one point!).
There was a 1st generation woman sitting a couple rows behind me, who kept
screaming after every number “Sing Daydream Beliver!!!! After the
umpteenth time it was getting REALLY annoying. Finally, during a set
break, as Micky was walking offstage, she yelled it again, but this time he
called back, “Don’t worry, Honey. It’s coming!” The audience broke up
laughing. It was great!
Costumes: Davy was in his Personal Trainer” outfit (white jeans/white
t-shirt). Peter was wearing white jeans and a multi-colored top. They
joked back and forth about clothing choices:
Davy (to Peter): Well, I see you couldn’t make up your mind on what to wear.”
Peter (to Davy): Yes, but I see you didn’t have the same problem!
and Micky wore (drum roll please, Sandy) Black jeans, a black t-shirt with
some kind of orange looking design (not the one from Billboard Live) AND an
unbuttoned orange (or salmon) long sleeved shirt!

Total Control: The Michael Nesmith Story
The only book brave enough to answer all of the questions and deflate some of the myths
surrounding the most volatile member of the made for TV band of the sixties–The Monkees.
Starting with his upbringing in Texas and going through his start as a Monkee and the ultimate destruction of the group to his solo career with the First National Band and then his
own record company Pacific Arts and it’s destruction at the hands of PBS resulting in multi-million dollar lawsuits.
In between all of that, his mother Bette invented Liquid Paper, he invented MTV, he also went on to win the first Grammy in the category of home video for “Elephant Parts” and he went on to executive produce such cult films as Timerider and Repo Man. All the while Michael stubbornly sticks to his guns and makes certain everything is run on his terms.

A mention in our paper today (from Marilyn Beck’s Hollywood column)
Hey, hey, Michael Nesmith’s a thinker
When it comes to original thinking, Michael Nesmith is right up
there. Really.
The man best known as a Monkee is making preparations for his fifth
Council on Ideas. It’s an idea Nesmith instigated in 1992 to bring together
great thinkers from a wide range of professions to discuss pressing issues
of the day.
Past council members have included Nobel Prize-winning physicist Amo
Penzias, architect Frank Gehry and Pulitzer Prixe-winning playwright Wendy
Wasserstein. Coming from these gatherings have been ideas on topics ranging
from improving education to the impact of government lagging behind the
technology boom.
“This is literally, a gathering of the elders,” says Nesmith. This
year’s nominees include the former president of a European country,
best-selling authors, CEOs of major corporations and college presidents.
