myplay Celebrity DJ Mix Pays Tribute to John Lennon and the BeatlesPlus the
Music of the Holiday Season
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Dec. 5 /PRNewswire/ — As the holidays rapidly
approach, myplay’s Celebrity DJ Mix feature will devote itself to John
Lennon and the holidays, featuring a John Lennon tribute mix, a Beatles
tribute with exclusive interviews, and finally, a holiday music mix from
ex-Monkee and TV/film producer Michael Nesmith.
Myplay, inc., the creator of the digital music Locker(TM), introduced the
Celebrity DJ Mix feature, in which recording artists and other entertainment
industry luminaries create streaming mixes of their favorite songs for
myplay customers. Myplay members can also share Celebrity DJ mixes legally
with their friends via myplay’s “E-mail Music” feature, simply by clicking
on an “e-mail this mix” button to e-mail a URL link to a specific DJ mix.
Just like an old-fashioned “mix tape,” the “E-mail this mix” button allows
you to create and legally send individual music mixes (playlists of songs)
to friends and family. The e-mail recipient can then click on the link to
listen to the streaming mix.
Former San Francisco DJ Dave Sholin, who conducted the last interview with
John Lennon before he was murdered, contributed a Lennon tribute mix.
Sholin tells the story in his introduction, offers three excerpts from that
interview (conducted at the Dakota on December 8, 1980), and plays a mix of
Beatles and Lennon music. Sholin was a DJ and program director at KFRC in
San Francisco, and hosted a Top 40 countdown show that was syndicated
nationally for years.
Also featured are interviews by Ben Fong-Torres of myplay with Paul
McCartney and Yoko Ono in the years following Lennon’s death. In his DJ
mix, Fong-Torres plays excerpts from those interviews and adds other
interview soundbites by Lennon and George Harrison. Fong-Torres also offers
a wide selection of Beatles and Lennon music, including Lennon compositions
performed by such artists as George Clinton and Mary Chapin Carpenter.
Turning from the Beatles to the holidays, Michael Nesmith, the ex-Monkee,
songwriter (“Different Drum,” “Joanne,” “Silver Moon”) and TV/film producer
(“Repo Man,” “Elephant Parts”), loves holiday music. “And I like the corny
stuff,” he says. “I play it around my house starting the day after
Thanksgiving.” His myplay mix ranges from the Carpenters to Keb Mo’, from
Willie Nelson and Gene Autry to Darlene Love and Oscar Peterson.
Michael Nesmith
Darlene Love’s “White Christmas,” Willie Nelson’s “Pretty Paper,” Beach
Boys’ “Baby;” Chuck Berry’s “Run Rudolph Run;” Bobby Helms’ “Jingle Bell
Rock;” Manhattan Transfer’s “Silent Knight,” Oscar Peterson’s “Have Yourself
a Merry Little Christmas;” Aaron Neville’s “Let It Snow” and Dean Martin’s
“Baby It’s Cold Outside.”
