The 45th anniversary of anything is an accomplishment. Even if you are a member of what could be considered the first successfully-manufactured “boy band.” The Monkees, well at least three of them, made Denver’s Paramount Theatre a stop on their 45th anniversary tour Tuesday night where they churned out hit after hit to a crowd of the TV generation that made their existence possible. The group makes no bones about the fact they were strategically placed in the pop music scene to sell cereal and sugar beverages to the tweens that, at the time, couldn’t tell them apart from the Beatles or the Stones.
While the audience patiently waited for original members Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, and Peter Tork to take the stage, they were entertained by a constant reel of commercials staring the pre-fab four. The entire crowd rose to their feet when the three took the stage and Dolenz took the microphone and started belting out their top-charting American single of 1967 “I’m a Believer.” The tour boasts them preforming 40 hits in a two hour show.
